I am a 47 year old patient with localised AL amyloidosis of the ureter. I was diagnosed by NACS in October 2020 after a series of scans and biopsies. I have ongoing 3 monthly appointments with my local haematologist to check my bloods. My light chains have been marginally higher at each appointment.
I would like to know whether my condition is considered to be an ‘underlying health condition’ and whether I should be eligible for the COVID vaccine? I have been advised to be extra cautious throughout the pandemic and now that the vaccine roll out for the under 50’s has been slowed down I am concerned as both my children are now back at school. I would appreciate your advice. Many thanks

This is Professor Gillmore's reply to your question:
The localised amyloidosis probably does not qualify, I am afraid, as an underlying health condition. More importantly however, it should not confer an additional risk in relation to COVID.
