Hello,

I'm new to this forum (and this disease). Thank you for the opportunity to learn more! I hope it's OK to ask questions here.

I came across several studies that showed a significant decrease in the number of free light chains in renal-involvement myeloma patients who underwent high cut-off hemodialysis and also a clinical trial on this treatment (NCT01531751).
For example:
http://jasn.asnjournals.org/content/18/3/886.short
http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0154993

It seems like this could help reduce the toxicity of the free light chains and improve cardiac function while the chemotherapy takes it's time to work, however it is not used in the centers I'm familiar with.
I would appreciate your help in understanding whether this treatment is really effective. Is it used at your center?

Thank you!

Jana

Hi Jana, welcome to the forum.

Dialysis methods to try to remove free light chains have not been shown to be beneficial in patients with AL amyloidosis, and this approach is no longer thought to be practicable, since even the best methods are not sufficiently efficient.
